Roles & Responsibilities
The Technical Superintendent will oversee the safe, reliable and cost-efficient technical operation of assigned bulk carriers and/or container vessels. The role is responsible for vessel maintenance, regulatory and class compliance, budget control and technical performance, while working closely with shipboard and shore-based teams to ensure smooth operations and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the technical management of assigned vessels to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations.
Ensure vessels comply with the Company's Safety and Quality Management System (SQMS), internal procedures and operational standards.
Maintain compliance with all applicable statutory, flag-state, classification society and international maritime requirements.
Monitor vessel performance, machinery condition, planned maintenance schedules and overall technical reliability.
Work closely with Masters and Chief Engineers to resolve technical issues and provide timely shore-based support.
Plan and supervise routine maintenance, emergency repairs, statutory surveys, class inspections and dry-docking projects.
Ensure all vessel statutory and class certificates remain valid and updated.
Prepare, manage and monitor vessel operating budgets while maintaining effective cost control.
Coordinate the timely procurement and delivery of spare parts, equipment and technical services.
Liaise with the crewing department to ensure vessels are adequately manned according to regulatory and operational requirements.
Prepare and submit technical, operational and financial reports to vessel owners in accordance with reporting requirements.
Promote a strong safety culture, environmental responsibility and energy-efficient vessel operations.
Provide technical advice and guidance to Masters, Chief Engineers and other shipboard personnel.
Coordinate with classification societies, flag administrations, shipyards, contractors, suppliers and equipment manufacturers.
Conduct regular vessel visits, inspections and audits to assess technical condition, verify compliance and follow up on outstanding matters.
Review existing technical procedures and recommend improvements to strengthen fleet performance, safety and cost efficiency.
Requirements
Applicants should fulfil at least one of the following qualification and experience criteria:
A recognized degree in Marine Engineering or another relevant maritime discipline, together with at least three years of applicable sea-going or shore-based experience within the shipping industry or
A valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (CoC), with a minimum of two years' sailing experience in the capacity of Chief Engineer or
At least two years of shore-based experience as a Technical Superintendent with a shipowner or ship-management company.
Additional requirements:
Proven experience in the technical management of bulk carriers and/or container vessels.
Strong working knowledge of vessel machinery, technical operations, planned maintenance systems (PMS), repairs, dry-docking and statutory requirements.
Good understanding of international maritime regulations, flag-state requirements, classification society rules and recognized industry standards.
Experience in technical purchasing, budget planning, cost tracking and expenditure control.
Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving abilities, with sound technical judgement.
Able to manage competing priorities, lead effectively and perform well in a fast-paced environment.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both shipboard and shore-based teams.
Good command of written and spoken English.
Familiarity with safety, environmental and quality-management frameworks, including the ISM Code and ISO standards, would be an advantage.
